Celebrating Poetry Month in the classroom

Celebrating Poetry Month in the classroom

During Poetry Month in April, the children in 2B immersed themselves in the joyful world of poems, language, and imagination. Throughout the month, the class gathered daily for poetry meetings where they listened to and discussed a wide variety of poems by well-known poets.

As they explored William Wordsworth’s Daffodils, the children reflected on how life was different “over two hundred years ago,” imagining a world without televisions or cell phones. They thoughtfully interpreted the poem’s emotions and imagery, sharing ideas about the dancing daffodils and the changing mood of the poet.

The class also delighted in Ogden Nash’s humorous poem Isabel, inspiring detailed drawings and lively conversations filled with creativity and laughter. As the month continued, the children created personalized poetry cubes featuring favorite poems they had collected and revisited throughout the unit. They then became poets themselves, dictating and composing original rhyming, serious, and funny poems.

The teachers were impressed by the children’s descriptive language, imagination, and sense of humor as they experimented with different styles of writing and self-expression. Poetry Month concluded with the celebration of Poem in Your Pocket Day, when each child brought a special poem from home to share with classmates. Throughout the month, 2B discovered that poetry can inspire deep thinking, spark creativity, and bring people together through language, rhythm, and storytelling.
