Facilities
All Souls School was founded in 1965 by members of the Unitarian Church of All Souls to meet community needs for a progressive preschool program. Since 1967, All Souls has operated as an independent nursery school. The School is a tenant in Wiggin House, the educational building of the Unitarian Church of All Souls, and does not have any form of religious instruction. In 2023, our school completed a full renovation, creating more beautiful and intentionally designed spaces to learn and explore. The renovation included new and updated classrooms, a new infant-toddler classroom (the NIDO), a dedicated children's library, administrative offices, teacher workspaces, and an art studio.
The NIDO
The NIDO (nest in Italian) is a bright and thoughtfully designed space for toddler exploration and learning. Inspired by the renowned nidos of Reggio Emilia, Italy, this environment supports curiosity, independence, and collaboration. The NIDO program brings together toddlers, families, and educators in a supportive learning community within the unique context of New York City. After years of planning and 18 months of construction, this space became a meaningful addition to the All Souls community and is also where students, teachers, and caregivers gather for School Sing.
The Atelier
Our dedicated art studio is a light-filled space brimming with natural materials and thoughtfully arranged art supplies. Children visit in small groups to work alongside our atelierista, exploring texture, color, and form as they transform their ideas into art. Sliding doors open to a courtyard, inviting nature to become part of their creative process and seamlessly blending the classroom environment with the world beyond.
The Roof
The beloved rooftop playground is on the 5th floor and is a place for outdoor exploration and play. With the wheeled toys, big block sets, climbing wall, and play house structure, the children have space to imagine and create while enthusiastically using their large muscles.
The Library
Filled with over 4,000 books, the school library has become a destination for our families. Many children and caregivers choose to arrive early to school to enjoy a calm moment while reading together in this beautiful and inviting space dedicated to exploration and curiosity. Older students visit the school library with their classrooms during the school day and love to greet our librarian.
The Ware Room
The Ware Room is a versatile learning space that supports Movement classes, infant programs, and a range of after-school enrichment activities. Bright and welcoming, it also serves as a gathering place for parents and caregivers during the school day and hosts community events such as the annual bake sale. The room’s walls regularly feature thoughtfully curated displays of student work, celebrating children’s creativity and learning.
The Staircase
Each floor of the school’s staircase is painted a specific color, helping children make connections with the different floors of the school building. Children are encouraged to use the staircase which helps refine their gross motor skills when visiting other areas of the school like the library, atelier, ware room, and when they go to the rooftop playground.
